There is and There are 

"There is" y "There are" means "Hay" in Spanish.  "There is" is singular y "There are" is plural.

Example: 

There is 1 book. 

      

There are 9 books. 

Let's do it with animals 

Example: 

1. How many animals are in the picture?

There are 13 animals in the picture

2. How many animals are in the picture?

There is 1 monkey.
